Manga sales between 2007 and 2009 dropped by a third and are continuing to drop. The US manga market was estimated to be at $210 million in 07 and as of the time of my source has dropped down to $140 million.

The anime market has had it even worse. In 2005 sales were at an estimated 450 million. They're down now to 160 - 200 million. That's a 42% drop in just a few short years. And it appears that the loss is coming from the core fanbase
