I've been studying japanese for about a month now and there's something i just can't seem to figure out.
Take the word shinigami (No reference to anime, just a good example of this) when the two kanji are split apart it becomes "shi" and "kami" but when put together it changes to "shinigami." Why is that? Is there any way to tell if this is the case with any other words without having to translate it?
