Is It Unusual For A Disc Error Check To Take A Very Long Time?

I turned on my laptop today and it was running really slow all of a sudden (I regret not shutting my laptop off last night and just closing the screen). It took forever to open anything. Then poof...blue screen and my computer turns off. I restarted and it was still running slow. So I try to get into avast antivirus but that takes forever to open. And it wont even update.
