Why Does Wolf's Rain Include Russian Lettering And Native American-ish Beliefs?

I'm a big fan of wolf's rain and i've watched the tv series several times... I've always admired the creativity of the story and the animation as well as the manga... But i was wondering why would it have russian lettering (in random spots like signs, etc) instead of Japanese since that was the language it was originally written in? and why does it include some Native American pagan beliefs? just creativity? the themes just seem randomly thrown together (while altogether successful) i was just
